Air pollution by road traffic vs indoor air quality

Are we on the right track? Road traffic causes a lot of pollution in Flanders and we all breathe that. Taking into account where you are staying, you should not forget that your indoor air is 2 to 100 times worse than the outside air. If you live or work close to a busy motorway, both outside air and certainly your indoor air will be polluted.

Why is indoor air so much worse than outside air?

The answer is simple and logical, our offices and homes are extremely well insulated, that the unhealthy air lingers in the room, you get an accumulation when there is no good ventilation. In addition, besides the outside air there are also various harmful gases in your indoor air through carpet, furniture, adhesives, printers, and much more. These include volatile organic substances.

Below is an overview of traffic-related outdoor air in Flanders, drawn up by the Flemish Environment Agency:

35% NOx
of total emissions
34% black carbon
of total emissions
  • NOxnitrogen oxides that contribute to the formation of Ozone and particulate matter
  • Black Carbonare particles of fine particles that are created by incomplete combustion of fuels such as diesel, wood and coal, ...
14% PM2.5
of total emissions
31% PM10
of total emissions
  • Fine Particles PMincludes all possible dust particles floating around in the air. PM10 and PM2.5 are minuscule particles, smaller than 10μm and 2.5μm. A micrometer (μm) is 1 / 1000th of a millimeter.

Causes diseases in our airways and lungs

Nitrogen oxides

Causes irritation to the respiratory tract

Black Carbon

Causes diseases of the lungs, heart and blood vessels and is carcinogenic

Diesel engine is the biggest polluter

Diesel cars

  • Nitrogen oxides
  • Black Carbon
  • Fine dust (exhaust)
  • Fine dust (brakes, tires, road surface)

Petrol cars

  • Nitrogen oxides
  • Black Carbon
  • Fine dust (exhaust)
  • Fine dust (brakes, tires, road surface)

Electric cars

  • Nitrogen oxides
  • Black Carbon
  • Fine dust (exhaust)
  • Fine dust (brakes, tires, road surface)

Did you know that wear causes more than 50% of the fine dust? In addition to using a car that is as clean as possible, we sometimes opt for sustainable means of transport such as bicycles or public transport.
